Declan McHale from the McHale Academy of Irish Dance

This film captures world champion dancer Declan McHale and shows him teaching, discussing the Declan Academy of Irish Dance and also looks back at the Irish dance community in the city of Coventry, UK.

At a tender age of three, Declan started dancing for the Doherty Academy of Irish Dancing in Coventry, England.

Throughout his competitive career, he enjoyed huge success in obtaining:

•             4 x World Championships

•             2 x All Irelands Championships

•             8 x Great Britain Championships

•             7 x British National Championships

•             10 x Midland Oireachtas’

From then he went on to tour the world with Irish Dance Shows including Riverdance, Lord of the Dance and Magic of the Dance. After leaving the “professional dance world” he went on to study at Birmingham City University where he obtained a degree in Advertising & Visual Communication this led onto him receiving awards worldwide for International Advertising Campaigns.

Declan is currently the Head of Menswear and Fashion accessories for London Badge & Button Company, which provides Men’s and Women’s fashion accessories to some of the most prestigious brands throughout the world. As well as maintaining my full time job, I have my own dancing school, The McHale Academy of Irish dancing and teach four nights a week in the Midlands of England. He opened up the school in 2014.

For the past 3 years he has also had the privilege of being hired as a dance instructor at Camp Rince Ceol, which is the largest Irish dance camp held in New York every July. Declan loves how it brings Irish dancers from all over the world together, in a non-competitor atmosphere to share their love of dancing. Declan believes there is no better feeling than watching the next generation be successful and knowing that he has been a part of making it happen!

In Declan’s most recent years of performing he has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with some of the most famous Irish Traditional bands including Cherish the Ladies, The Chieftains, Dervish, Lúnasa and Solas to name a few.

Back in December 2015, he was honoured to be invited to Boston, Massachusetts for Brian O’Donovan’s extremely successful ‘A Christmas Celtic Sojourn’ for the shows 13th anniversary which brought in over 12,500 people for the successful run over nine days. Since the start of 2016, Declan has been a part of the latest viral sensation in Irish Dancing – Fusion Fighters and is currently a featured dancer on their latest online video.

Declan’s career highlight to date definitely has to be performing at the world famous Glastonbury Music Festival in 2014 where he was invited by Dervish to dance on the Avalon Stage and the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. Never  a thought that he would have the opportunity to dance at one of the World’s most famous Music Festivals alongside huge artists such as Dolly Parton, Robert Plant, Metallica and Ed Sheeran to name a few.
